Upgrading Your Gun
« on: April 09, 2010, 01:45:48 pm »
Right, in general from years of experience these are what I've found to be the best all round upgrades for a gearbox/hop unit.

1. A 1 joule spring which should allow you to use your gun in virtually any UK airsoft site. Depending on gun, barrel length etc between 300-330 fps.

2. A 6.03mm tightbore barrel, should avoid jams and give you a little more accuracy.

3. A spring bearing guide and a bearing piston head. Both should allow better spring movement and give less strain on the gearbox.

4. Either solid metal bushings or metal ball bearings.

5. A good hop rubber , TM is still one of the best, followed by the Guarder clear rubber. A H nub, one of the best and cheapest I've found is the Element H which comes in white and black.

Taken altogether this should put your fps at 325-335. Ideal for nearly all airsoft sites and ideal for DV!

Actually, as my JG G36 was shooting at 380fps last month, I have just installed a M90+ spring and a rotary spring guide, this'll bring it under 350fps, right?

Should do, but does depend on the manufacturer of the spring, as unfortunatly not all springs are rated the same. For instance some companies rate their springs using .25 weight bb's. If it does go over you'll just have to take a couple of coils off the end of the spring. Note: best way to cut a spring is with a Dremel and a cutting disc.

Most important website if you are going to upgrade your gearbox yourself

I think the brand was "Modify", I ordered it from Airsoftworld

Modify spring should be fine. It's mainly the guarder ones to look out for. The Guarder m100 seems to be like an average 120/130. So most people opt for the Guarder SP85 or a Systema or equivalent 1 joule or M100.

Thank christ for that, I would honestly rather buy a new AEG than open up that damn gearbox again

As a note, I've always found that Systema 1J springs always rate on the low side, if you're expecting 328-330 you'll end up at 310 -315fps. Found this on more than one occasion when using them. Got a feeling that Systema main well use .25 weight bb's when measuring their springs. Best for consistancy I've found are Guarder and Hurricane.
