Poor Man's Chrono
« on: July 02, 2010, 04:11:53 pm »
Now before I start, can i just make it clear that I do not plan on using this to detirmine a an accurate reading. I will only use it to gauge if im firing well over the limit or well under.

I have found this on the internet while i was looking as chronos. Has anyone used this method and if so did you find it worked?

Its purly for my new M60 Mk43. I have an M733 which i know is firing at 310-320 fps and has been for the last 3 trips to DV so i will also use it to compare to the mk43.

Just wondering if anyone has used it before. Thanks

"There are six ranges of penetration on a Coke can. In order of difficulty they are:
One Side…………….290+FPS
Both Sides…………..340+FPS
Bottom Center………385+FPS*
Bottom Edge………...450+FPS
Top Center…………..470+FPS
Top Edge……………500+FPS

do not hold the can
align the muzzle of your gun 1-2 inches from the surface of the can

*According to ******* ******* this area is penetrated at 430FPS. However, in my testing, and that of others, we can consistently penetrate this area of a can at a minimum of 385fps."

I wouldn't even touch that with a barge pole.. The only true way to measure fps is via a chrono. anything else just doesn't matter.. there are to many variables when shooting at something. chrono's can cost as little as 30 bucks. if your that keen on tuning your gun.

Invest in your own chrono.

Also if you're going to buy a chrono for tuning, I'd recommend you get one of the same make and model that we use at DV.  From our experiences we've found there can sometimes be quite large margins between different manufacturers.  Ultimately though it's our chrono reading that we use on the day.  You'd be surprised at the number of people who say "oh, but it chronoed at 340fps at site x last weekend" when their gun fails.

XCoretech x3200 I think it is.

I use this:

Been accurate to DV`s chrono`s so far.

i've got one of the xcortech chronos which DV uses - was pricy when I bought it but has saved me no end of grief.

The other one linked to on RSOV has given me similar results too.

Madbull ones give me results all over the shop, I don't rate them personally

Thanks for the replies guys but like i said i wasnt using it as an accurate measure of fps... just to know whether is was firing way to hot or not and if so preparing myself to cut the spring after chrono at next game.... I wouldnt dream of using it as an accurate measurement.

Thanks
