Dragon Valley 1 Revisited
« on: March 16, 2011, 11:29:33 am »
Was flicking channels late last night and came across this short film on BBC2.  This was filmed at the former Boys Village site at West Aberthaw, where Dragon Valley was based before moving to Caerwent in 2003.

That was one of the most haunting things I've seen on the BBC.

That is really wierd to see it like that.

Makes it seem like it was in good condition when we used to play there.

I can see it now....
Libyan Rebel: "how does it work?"
French soldier: "hey nonny nonnied, firmly if I know, we just drop it and run away"

Because people used to fall into it. Well, only one person that I can remember, but that was enough.

The pool used to be indoors, looks like that structure has gone. I have just remembered how we came to be called Dragon Valley though, had forgotten the origin of that one.

Yep, I was scratching my head for a while on that one as I remember it being indoors too.  Read up on it and apparently the roof collapsed a few years back and the walls were pulled down as they were unsafe.

Are there any pics around of how it was when you used to play there?

I have always wondered the history of the place but it would seem that I am epic fail when it comes to googling about the place...

I don't have any, there are a few on Google image search.  The only other ones I know of are the ones that were taken at LoE.  I know Olly had a webpage for them, can't find it now though.

Yeah,. I set up the site back in 2001 (jeez.. ten years ago). Jeff and Brian came along in mid 2002 and we decided on Dragon Valley as a name. I can't even remember why. I think we stopped playing around 2004 and moved to Caerwent the same year.

In terms of a site, it was very good to play in. Funny enough, the least fun part was the pool itself - a big space filled with nothing. Far better were the many different little rooms and the canteen.

That said, it was a health and safety nightmare. Pre-dating the need for insurance, it was a deathtrap of live wiring, fall hazards, and climbing up roofs to shoot down.. How no-one ended up seriously hurt I'll never know.
Amongst you.

Just been doing a bit of reading about the place (Yes I know I should be working...) was there a car (spitfire) in the gym?

The Dragon Valley name was inspired by that dragon motif on the entrance wall under the "Boys Village" sign.

The pool and gym always played best when filled with bright orange smoke, of the type that you probably aren't supposed to breath in. I don't remember a car being in there.

I'll see if I can dig out some photos, I should have them on CD somewhere.

I do have a vague memory of there being a car in the gym, wasn't it off to the side in that little room/storage cupboard at the far end beyond the seating area - but got to from the gym floor.

I used to love the swimming pool area. Super sneaky beaky being able to see people moving outside through the semi opaque glass, but having to wait for them to go near a hole before you could shoot at them.

Freaky stuff. Also in the film I though I saw "Gee MAN" spray painted on the side of the pool at 9:44

just looked over those urbex pictures, gutted that the structure around the swimming pool has been vandalised/knicked.

Was always great fun watching people sneak round the side of the building thinking they couldn't be seen but on the inside they were perfectly silouetted! I remember Biscuits sliding a door open and shooting someone in the arse when they went past, very funny.

Anyone else remember Dave Broom's wife managing to get a nade stuck between the door frame and the light switch?

The moment that really sticks in my head is shooting Pigpie off the apex of a roof and him landing in a tree. The tree appears to be missing now.

The best moment there (other than LoE of course) was when Brian ran across the courtyard inbetween the 3 buildings and got shot. He breathed in so hard that his trousers fell down and he penguined off with his hand in the air!

Stand by for incredible necro post:

So I had to register and reply to this topic just for the #feels
I was just having a conversation about a "certain incident" that I'm famed for (I'll digress shortly) at the old DV site with a few friends and googled "Boys Village, Dragon Valley" this thread was at the top of the list...

SO, I played at Boys village twice back in the day (Back when I was a whipper snapper) Both times were some of the most amazing airsoft I have ever played. My first urban experience to which every CQB/urban site I have played at since has been judged by...

I agree that place was a health and safety nightmare... I remember seeing people climbing up onto the roof of one of he buildings to ninja a group of players from behind... I also remember getting shot in the back of the head by a guy who had found a crawl space in one of the ceilings and was hiding away in there... :)

The first time I played at Boys Village (also searching just that brings up some odd results...) we took a 5 hour drive down from the North in the back of a sketchy Fiat van. Met up with a lot of the airsoft.org/ascuk regulars, including a bunch of the "Insomniac army" from #airsoft on the old mIRC channel... (Although the only name I can remember right now is Thormann...)
The day was amazing and was topped off with me running from the gym through a haze of orange smoke and tracer fire and falling head first into a certain pool... Proper concussion job right there!

The second time we played was about a year later when WASPS team turned up in full force for a weekender (Where the legendary Silvafox was hung upside down over the stairs so he could have his boot prints on the ceiling) Another intense and amazing game which ended up again in the gym, with me tripping over what I seem to remember was a 3x2 screwed into the floor (I think it was to support some makeshift cover) and hitting my knee on what I guess was the only brick in the whole room. Broken bones ftw :) Luckily the guy who drove us down is a paramedic and strapped me up good and proper for the 5 hour trip home lmao...

Absolutely love that place. It'd be top of my bucket list to play there one more time if I thought it was feasible!

In other news we also made a trip down to Caerwent for the very first day... If it wasn't a 5 hour drive we'd be there every game :)

I do have some very poor quality photographs of one of the times we played there somewhere... I'll get them online at some point...

Sorry for the necro post :)

Goddamn, I never had a chance to play at the old site. It does look and sound amazing. H&S really does make the world a more boring place, climbing roofs, into crawl spaces is exactly the kind of stuff I'd do.

Good to hear from you Magaz, you'll have to make that 5 hour trek down over the summer, make a weekend of it.

It's on the cards Firkit! One of the guys I play with had his very first airsoft experience at the "DV2" opening day... He's been keen to get back down for years... I think it's time to dust off the CBMPC! Battle wagon for a long trip ;)
